TorkLift Camper Tie Down Installation Mistakes to Avoid

Installing TorkLift camper tie downs starts with the correct parts and the instructions for those parts. Use the checks below to catch selection, assembly and reconnection mistakes before they become part of your travel routine.

This guide covers outboard, frame-mounted TorkLift systems. For the component names, see tie downs vs turnbuckles. The supplied installation instructions remain the reference for the work.

1. Assuming the truck model confirms the application

A model name or a similar-looking bracket is not enough to choose a kit. Record the model year, body style, cab, bed, drivetrain, running boards and hitch. Use TorkLift's official Fit Finder (opens in a new tab) and have TorkLift resolve anything unclear before ordering or reusing an older installation.

Our guides to running boards and rear hitch identification help you prepare that information.

2. Counting packages instead of connection points

A front tie-down pair is not a front-and-rear kit. Turnbuckles are separate components, and a turnbuckle pair is not four individual turnbuckles. Check the itemized contents against the manufacturer's confirmed front and rear part numbers and the connections required for the camper.

Use the parts checklist before ordering to record complete part numbers, suffixes and quantities.

3. Making the hardware fit by improvising

Match the components and any driver/passenger markings to the exact kit's parts list and diagrams. Do not copy the washer arrangement, bracket orientation or tightening sequence from a different kit.

For example, TorkLift's C2225 instruction booklet (PDF; opens in a new tab) identifies separate side-specific receivers, spacers and fasteners. It also notes that complete illustrations are supplied with the kit. That booklet is an example, not instructions for every TorkLift part.

If parts bind or holes do not align as instructed, stop and check the application, components and instructions with TorkLift. Do not file receivers, add homemade spacers or alter the truck to work around an unexplained mismatch.

4. Confusing turnbuckle tension with bolt torque

The truck-side mounting fasteners and the spring-loaded turnbuckles have different adjustment procedures. A bolt-torque value from one bracket kit is not a turnbuckle-tension setting.

Follow the current instructions for the exact brackets, turnbuckles and camper. Do not tighten by maximum effort, copy a setting from an unrelated model or use extra tension to compensate for missing hardware. Read the explanation of turnbuckle tension for the distinction.

For a confirmed S9526 installation, our S9526 Original FastGun listing links to TorkLift's assembly and adjustment resources.

5. Skipping pins and clearance checks

Check the insert-retaining hardware and the turnbuckle's required handle-retaining components using the supplied instructions. An optional security accessory should not be assumed to replace another retaining component unless TorkLift specifies that installation.

Also verify the instructed clearance around the truck body and equipment. If a hitch or running board has changed since the application was confirmed, ask TorkLift whether the installed parts still apply.

6. Treating every unloaded rattle as a defect

TorkLift explains that removable inserts have designed clearance inside the receivers. The C2225 booklet specifically notes that some rattle can occur when inserts remain installed without camper load.

That is not a reason to ignore damaged parts or unexplained movement with the camper connected. Avoid improvised shims or extra tightening; have an uncertain condition checked by TorkLift or a qualified installer.

7. Reconnecting without inspecting

Before reusing stored hardware, look at the brackets, inserts, retaining components, turnbuckles and camper anchors. Dirt can hide finish damage or wear. Follow the manufacturers' inspection and recheck instructions, and resolve missing, bent or cracked parts before travel.

The maintenance and inspection checklist provides a repeatable walk-around and a simple inspection record.

Before you start

  • Keep the confirmed front and rear part numbers and complete kit instructions beside the parts.
  • Check the packing list and record any missing or unfamiliar components.
  • Ask TorkLift about fitment, interference or adjustment questions before proceeding.
